UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Iran will ask the international community to take a stand on the United States’ decision to classify the Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif was quoted as saying on Sunday.
Iran condemned the move last week by US President Donald Trump as illegal. The Revolutionary Guard is a powerful force that dominates many of Iran’s state and economic affairs.
“We will send letters to the foreign ministers of all countries to inform them that it is necessary for them to express their positions and to warn them that this unprecedented dangerous American action will have consequences,” Zarif was quoted as saying by the official IRNA news agency.
Zarif said he also sent letters to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council to protest against the “illegal American move.”
Tehran responded to Trump’s move to classify the US Central Command as a terrorist organization.
Relations between Tehran and Washington worsened in May when Trump announced a withdrawal from the nuclear deal signed between Iran and six world powers in 2015 and the re-imposition of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.
The United States has already listed dozens of entities and individuals on the black list for allegedly being linked to the Revolutionary Guards but has not targeted Iranian forces before.
Revolutionary Guards commanders have repeatedly said US bases in the Middle East and US aircraft carriers in the Gulf are in the range of Iranian missiles.
Tehran has also threatened to block oil shipments across the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if the United States tries to stifle Iran’s economy by halting oil exports.
The balance of supply and demand in the world oil market is fragile due to US pressure on Iran and Venezuela and tensions in Libya, Oil Minister Begin Zengane said on Sunday, warning of the consequences of increasing pressure on Iran.
