UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump, in conversations with his entourage, offers to take much more money from the governments of the countries-allies of Washington for the fact that American servicemen are serving on their territory, as the Washington Post newspaper reported, quoting sources, the head of state called the cost plus 50 a new formula.
According to the publication, Trump proposes to demand from the countries payment of all costs associated with maintaining the normal state of the bases and maintenance of equipment, as well as the salaries of the US military, and that at the same time the state would pay another 50% of this amount.
As a result, as the newspaper explained, the states will be forced to pay the US about five times more than at present. Washington’s allies already call such a formula extortion.
As the newspaper notes, this scheme, if it is actually approved, will mainly affect Germany, Japan and South Korea, where several thousand US military are deployed. A newspaper source noted that the American side has already discussed payments under the new formula “cost plus 50” with at least one country.
Trump has repeatedly criticized countries in NATO for the fact that, in his opinion, they do not spend enough money to maintain the alliance’s collective defense. Trump demanded that all NATO member countries as soon as possible to bring defense spending to 2% of GDP.
During a speech at the summit of the alliance, he proposed that countries not only fulfill this obligation, but also increase spending to 4% of GDP. Currently, only eight NATO members spend more than 2% on defense, the US military budget is about 3.58% of GDP.
