UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The development of Russia’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is expected to begin in 2023. It will be equipped with modern and advanced offensive and defensive capabilities, writes the Russian press.

Research and development work for the design of a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier would begin soon in Russia. Nothing concrete has been unveiled about the future appearance of the ship: we only know that it should be equipped with a nuclear propulsion and display a displacement of water of about 70,000 tons, says Gazeta.

Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borissov confirmed that the work for the creation of such an aircraft carrier was planned “for a long time”, without specifying the exact date of its launching.

We know that the project of the future aircraft carrier under the code 23000 Storm was proposed by the Krylov National Research Center. As military expert Alexei Leonov told the daily Gazeta, several presentations of the ship’s model were held behind closed doors, and the projects evolved.

According to him, the construction of an aircraft carrier for the navy is indeed necessary because the missions of the fleet have changed considerably in recent years.

The expert assumes that this aircraft carrier should be equipped with either RITM-200 water reactors, which are currently installed on Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers, or a specially designed liquid-metal reactor.

“Currently, we are mastering the creation of such engines. I do not exclude that work can already be done in this direction,” notes the expert.

According to him, in terms of air defense the building could be equipped with a naval version of the all-new S-500 system, and as a base of its air wing could begin the development of the embedded version of the Su-57, or even the revival of the project for the design of a vertical take-off and landing aircraft, including the “resuscitation” of the Yak-141 taking into account modern technologies.
