Washington postpones a 90-day ban on Huawei

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US Secretary of Economy Wilbur Ross on Monday postponed a 90-day ban on Chinese telecoms giant Huawei’s acquisition of US technology.

“For 90 days, some rural companies are dependent on Huawei,” he told Fox Business. “We will give them a longer period to get used to stop doing business with the Chinese company.”

He said the new deadline for implementing the ban was November 19.

The ban is part of a comprehensive effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to restrict the activities of Huawei, which officials say have ties to Chinese intelligence, making it a threat.

Ross said 46 more Huawei subsidiaries were being added to the list of banned companies, meaning that more than 100 subsidiaries were now subject to restrictions.

However, the Ministry of Economy extended a temporary license for US companies to work with the Chinese company and its subsidiaries for another 90 days.

“Technically, Huawei says it is a private company, but under Chinese law, even private companies should cooperate with the military and Chinese intelligence agencies, and they should not disclose that they are doing so,” Ross said.

Huawei is the world’s second-largest smartphone vendor, and is a global leader in 5G equipment, but is hampered by access to major hardware and software including smart phone chips.

“We don’t want to work with Huawei for national security reasons,” US President Donald Trump said on Sunday.
