UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Venezuela will close its consulates in the cities of Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal and limit its diplomatic activities at its embassy in Ottawa in response to Canada’s temporary closure of its embassy in Caracas, an official source said on Saturday.
The Venezuelan Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Canada’s decision “to temporarily close its embassy in Caracas is not just an administrative issue, but a political decision that shows the government’s continued hostility towards Venezuela.”
“Under the principle of reciprocity,” Caracas will “suspend activity in its consulates in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal at a time … and all Venezuelan diplomacy will be concentrated at its embassy in Ottawa,” the source said.
Canada announced a week ago its decision to temporarily close its embassy in Venezuela, citing President Nicolas Maduro’s refusal to accuse diplomats of criticizing his government.
Canada is one of the first to recognize, in consultation with the United States, the President of the National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as acting President.
More than 50 countries have recognized Guaido as acting president, while the opposition says the last presidential election in May 2018 and allowed Maduro to remain in power is fraudulent.
