The US has successfully test fired an unarmed intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in a “critical” test of its nuclear capabilities.

US military personnel test fired the “lethal” Minuteman III ICBM at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California at 12.03am PDT (8am UK time) today.

The ICBM was launched to prove the effectiveness, readiness and accuracy of the weapon, US military chiefs said.
