UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The United States and other countries, including France, are seeking to create a $ 10 billion aid fund that will be available to the next Venezuelan authorities to revive trade in the country plunged into a crippling economic crisis, US Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Saturday.

“We are working on trying to create a $ 10 billion fund that will be available to the new government to revive trade,” Mnuchin told a press conference at the end of the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund.

He said the initiative was born during a meeting Thursday with representatives of 19 other countries on the sidelines of the spring meeting of the International Monetary Fund in Washington.

France, Germany, Japan, Canada, Italy and a number of Latin American countries such as Brazil, Mexico, Chile and Argentina were among the participants.

“Whenever I participate in a similar meeting, I can not believe how bad the situation is getting worse for the Venezuelans,” Mnuchin said.

Unlike the United States and many other countries, Thursday’s meeting was attended by countries that did not recognize opposition leader Juan Guido as interim president of Venezuela, such as Italy and Mexico.

During the spring meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, the two institutions said they were ready to help Venezuela, which faces a “real humanitarian crisis,” in the words of the new World Bank President David Malpas, but they can not immediately implement this promise in the absence of recognition of the legitimacy of the President this country.
