US judge blocks DOJ withholding federal dollars from ‘sanctuary cities’

US District Judge Harry Leinenweber has issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting the Justice Department from implementing a policy that would deny federal grant money to “sanctuary cities” that do not comply with federal immigration requests.

Friday’s rulingcame after the city of Chicago sued the federal government in August, arguing that the policy forced it to choose between the constitutional rights of its residents and funding for law enforcement.

In his ruling, Leinenweber said his order would be effective nationwide, writing there is “no reason to think that the legal issues present in this case are restricted to Chicago or that the statutory authority given to the Attorney General would differ in another jurisdiction.”
