UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The US administration has invoked “Iranian aggression” to justify new arms sales, which will “strengthen stability in the Middle East” and “support [its] allies”, through an “emergency” procedure that bypasses the opinion of the Congress.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo confirmed on Friday, May 25, the use of an “emergency” procedure to unblock 22 weapons contracts for a total of about $ 8.1 billion (about 7.2 Billions of Euros).
“Today, I made the decision […] and ordered the Department to immediately make official notification of 22 pending arms transfers to Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, for a total of a total of $ 8.1 billion to deter Iran’s aggression,” he said on the State Department website.
According to him, these sales “will support our allies [those of the United States, note], strengthen the stability in the Middle East” and quickly consolidate “the ability of our partners [those of the United States, note] to ensure their own defense Against Iran.”
The US Congress passed a resolution in early April on the halting of US assistance to the Saudi-led coalition in the conflict in Yemen. Donald Trump had vetoed it.
