The United States continues to provide military support to the self-defense forces of the Syrian Kurds (YPG), Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said.

Earlier, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that US President Donald Trump assured Erdogan by telephone that he had instructed to stop the supply of American YPG weapons, which Ankara considers a terrorist organization connected with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) banned in Turkey.

“Unfortunately, our US friend, the US, is still supplying the terrorists (YPG) with weapons, which is the source of our concern … We will not allow the creation of a terrorist corridor in the north of Syria with access to the Mediterranean, and we will do everything necessary in case of such a threat”, Erdogan said at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron in Paris, where the Turkish leader is on a visit. He again opposed the participation of Syrian President Bashar Assad in future elections. “Syria needs democratic elections, Turkey is ready to help it … On the subject of Syria, we plan to organize a meeting of foreign ministers of countries that have similar views on the situation in the country in order to decide on joint steps,” Erdogan added.
