UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The United States expressed its anger over Spain’s decision to remove its frigate from naval battle group Abraham Lincoln.
Spanish diplomatic sources, who requested anonymity, announced on Wednesday (May 15th) that the US embassy in Madrid had strongly criticized the Spanish government for not warning its decision to withdraw its frigate Mendez Nunez from the group. Naval aircraft of the American aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln currently in the Persian Gulf.
According to the same sources, “employees of the American Embassy in Madrid met Tuesday with officials of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”
On the other side in Washington, Spanish diplomats have provided explanations on the subject to American officials.
Spanish Defense Minister Margarita Robles said the US government had made a decision that fell outside the scope of what had been agreed with the Spanish navy.
Spanish media, citing government sources, said Spain was worried about being dragged into an undesirable conflict by the crisis between Washington and Tehran.
The carrier battle group of the US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln arrived last week in the waters of the Persian Gulf. US National Security Advisor John Bolton reiterates that the aircraft carrier has been deployed in the region to “counter Iran’s possible threats to the interests of the United States and its allies.”
