UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The agency will soon unveil an effort to try to use US aid to counter Russian influence around the world, said Mark Green, director of the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
“The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will soon unveil a framework to help us counter the harmful influence of the Kremlin, especially in Europe and Eurasia,” Green said at a session of the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday.
For the fiscal year ending September 30, 2020, the Agency’s budget request included $ 584 million for the State Department’s foreign and aid assistance for that goal, as well as efforts to “communicate strongly” what he called “authoritative financing tools”.
Green did not give further details.
Under President Vladimir Putin, Russia sought to strengthen its international influence, including by granting loans to countries in Latin America and elsewhere.
