UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) said a $ 60 million shortfall by next month would make its ability to feed one million refugees in the Gaza Strip very challenging.

Of these, “some 620,000 people are extremely poor, those who can not meet their basic food needs and who have to live on less than $ 1.6 per day, and some 390,000 people are in absolute poverty,” the UN agency said. Who live on less than $ 3.5 per day.”

The Agency, which relies entirely on voluntary contributions, explained that financial support had not kept pace with growth in needs.

“Of fewer than 80,000 Palestine refugees receiving social aid from UNRWA in Gaza in 2000, today there are more than one million people in need of emergency food aid and without whom they can not live on their day,” the agency said in a statement.

The agency pointed out that this is due to “the siege that led to the closure of Gaza and its disastrous impact on the community, in addition to the successive conflicts that destroyed entire neighborhoods and destroyed the infrastructure on the ground, in addition to the ongoing internal Palestinian political crisis, which began in 2007, Power in Gaza”.

In August, the United States halted all funding it provided to UNRWA on an annual basis, amounting to some $ 370 million.

Some Arab countries have worked to fill the gap caused by the cessation of US support for UNRWA, but it is not clear whether they will work on it annually.
