The United Nations will seek new sources of funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) if the United States cuts its contributions to support the activities of this structure.

This was stated on Monday by the official spokesperson of the Secretary General of the World Organization Stefan Dujarric, commenting on a possible move by Washington.

According to him, in the UN secretariat they prefer not to comment on “what has not happened yet.” “We will wait and see what the real figures will be. The United States is the main donor of UNRWA, we have always appreciated their contribution, but the fact is that UNRWA’s work is critically important, and if any donor significantly cuts contributions, then we will have to look for other sources of [funding],” said the representative of the UN Secretary General.

He stressed that at the moment, Washington did not notify the leadership of the world organization about the intention to cut down UNRWA financing.
