UN shocked with mass executions in Iraq

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) is shocked by the massive executions in Iraq, calls upon Baghdad to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty, said UNHCR spokeswoman Elizabeth Trossell at a briefing.

On the eve of the Ministry of Justice of Iraq reported that the death sentence was carried out by 38 convicted for terrorism. As stated by the department, the execution took place after the final confirmation of sentences and approval by the leadership of the republic.
“We are deeply shocked by the mass execution of 38 people, which occurred on Thursday in Iraq.” The application of the budget penalty in the country is of great concern, “Trossell said.

She recalled that 38 prisoners were sentenced for crimes related to terrorism. According to Trossell, UN representatives this year learned about 106 executions in Iraq, including the case of a massive hanging of 42 prisoners in September.

“We once again urge the Iraqi authorities to stop all executions, immediately establish a moratorium on the use of the death penalty and conduct an urgent and comprehensive review of the criminal justice system,” Trossell noted.
