UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution reaffirming the Golan’s dependence on Syria and condemning the Israeli occupation of these lands in response to US President Donald Trump’s intention to recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the plateau.
The resolution, submitted by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), was voted in favor of 26 countries against 16 countries including Britain, Ukraine, Japan and Australia, while five members abstained.
The vote was taken without the participation of the United States, which emerged from the UN Human Rights Council last year in protest against its “bias” against Israel.
The adoption of the resolution comes against the background of the announcement by US President Donald Trump on Thursday that “the time has come to recognize the full sovereignty of Israel on the Golan,” in a move not received any welcome only by the Israeli government.
Since the June 1967 war, Israel has occupied about 1,200 square kilometers of the Syrian Golan Heights, a move not recognized by the international community, while some 510 square kilometers remain under Syrian sovereignty.
The plateau, which was previously part of the Syrian province of Quneitra, under international law, is occupied territory and is subject to UN Security Council Resolution 242 of 1967, which stipulates that Israel must withdraw from it.
In December 1981, the Israeli parliament adopted a law declaring Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, but the UN Security Council rejected this resolution. The UN General Assembly also affirmed the illegality of the occupation of the Golan Heights, calling for its return to Syria.
