UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The UN’s appeal to help feed the 20 million hungry people in Yemen made it possible to collect only 14% of the required amount, another $ 4.2 billion is needed, Deputy Chief Representative of the UN Head Farhan Haq told reporters.
“The UN humanitarian appeal to help Yemen allowed to collect only 14%, another $ 4.2 billion is needed to provide 20 million people with food, water and medical care,” said Haq.
He added that it is estimated that approximately 10 million people are one step away from hunger, and “the UN and its partners are doing everything possible to help these people and reduce the risk of hunger.”
Haq noted that according to the World Food Program, emergency food aid in Yemen was provided to 10.6 million people in March – “more than any other month.”
In the coming months, WFP plans to expand its operations to include 12 million people a month, the organization’s representative added.
The military-political conflict in Yemen between the government and the Hussite rebels from the Shiite Ansar Allah movement has been going on since 2014. Since March 2015, a military coalition of Arab countries, led by Saudi Arabia, has been on the side of the government.
In December 2018, the parties to the conflict in Yemen for the first time in several years met at the negotiating table, which were organized under the auspices of the UN in Sweden. They managed to reach a number of important agreements, in particular, on the exchange of prisoners, a cease-fire in the port city on the Red Sea, Hodeida, and the transfer of it to the Hussites under UN control.
