UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump said he did not know anything about WikiLeaks and the arrest of Julian Assange.

Earlier it became known that Ecuador, in whose embassy in London Assange had been hiding since 2012, decided to deny him diplomatic asylum. British police then reported that Assange was arrested on a warrant issued in 2012 for failing to appear in court.

US Department of Justice said that Assange is accused of conspiracy to commit a computer hacking and in the event of a conviction, he faces up to five years in prison.

“I don’t know anything about WikiLeaks. This is not my topic,” he told reporters on Thursday.

According to him, he is also not aware of the detention of Assange. Trump also said that further steps are in the hands of the Attorney General.

“I have no opinion,” Trump added, responding to a question about the attitude to the charges against Assange in the United States.

Assange gained fame in connection with a number of publications, including on US military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq and on the conditions of detention at the Guantanamo camp. In 2010, the founder of WikiLeaks was convicted of sexual crimes in Sweden, denied any involvement in it.

A Swedish court declared him on the international wanted list, after which Assange was detained in London, but was soon released on bail.

In 2017, the case against him in Sweden was closed, but after news of the arrest of Assange, the Swedish Prosecutor’s Office announced that it was considering the possibility of resuming the investigation.
