UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump on Tuesday proposed Russia’s return to the G7.
Trump said in a statement from the White House: “I think it is more appropriate to return Russia to the group of the world’s most advanced economies,” the agency quoted “Associated Press.”
He added: “I am talking about Russia because I will hold a number of meetings (on the sidelines of the G7 summit), and I think it is appropriate that Russia be present.
The G7 summit is scheduled for August 24-26 in Biarritz, southwestern France.
The G7 includes the United States, France, Italy, Canada, Britain, Japan and Germany.
The group was called the G8 before Russia was ousted in 2014, following its decision to annex Crimea to its territory.
In March 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, bordering the Black Sea, to its territory following an illegal referendum boycotted by the Crimean Tatars.
Since the annexation decision, the minority Tartars in the region have complained of repression, including arbitrary arrests and detentions, while the European Parliament earlier called on Russia to end the injustice against the Tartars on the peninsula.
