UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump warned that Iran would face serious consequences if the authorities take ill-considered steps. “Let’s see how the situation will develop around Iran. If they do at least something, it will be a huge mistake. If they do at least something, they will suffer greatly,” the American leader told reporters in the White House.
On May 5, Assistant to the President of the United States for National Security John Bolton said that the US would send a naval strike team led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft and a tactical bomber group to the zone of operational responsibility of the Middle East as a signal to the Iranian authorities and the tactical bomber group.
On April 8, Trump made a decision to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC, the elite units of the Iranian Armed Forces) on the list of foreign terrorist organizations. The United States motivated this move by stating that the IRGC “actively participates [in terrorist activities], finances and promotes terrorism as an instrument of state policy.”
In response, the Iranian Supreme National Security Council counted among the terrorist organizations the US Central Command. On April 23, the Iranian parliament ratified all 14 provisions of the bill by a majority of votes, and on April 30, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani signed the relevant law.
