Trump: If Tehran wanted to “go to war” it would be “the end of Iran”

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US President Donald Trump vowed on Sunday to destroy Iran if it attacked US interests.

“If Iran wants to go to war, it will be the official end of Iran, do not threaten the United States again,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Tension between Tehran and Washington, which deployed a B-52 carrier and bombers in the Gulf last week on the pretext of “threats” emanating from Iran, has recently escalated.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Saturday played down the possibility of a new war in the region, saying Tehran “does not want” the war and all sides understand that “no one can” face his country.

“We are sure … there will be no war because we do not want war and no one has any illusions that he can confront Iran in the region,” Zarif told state news agency IRNA at the end of his visit to China.

“Trump does not want a war, but those around him are pushing him toward war on the pretext of making America stronger against Iran,” he said.

US-Iranian relations reached their lowest levels last year after Trump’s withdrawal from a nuclear deal signed in 2015 between Tehran and major international powers, which provides for easing international sanctions on the Islamic Republic in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program.

For his part, the commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Major General Hussein Salami said Saturday that his country is currently engaged in a “comprehensive intelligence war” with the United States.

“What is happening is a mixture of psychological warfare, online operations, military mobility, public diplomacy and the instigation of fear,” the semi-official ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.

“America’s prestige is on the verge of coming to an end, and at the same time, we must be aware of any potential risks in such circumstances.”
