UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — British Prime Minister Theresa May will leave her post on June 7th. She announced her resignation the day after the elections to the European Parliament, in which the UK had to participate because of the postponed Brexit.

In a special address in front of the residence of the Prime Minister on Downing Street, May announced that she would leave the post of leader of the Conservative Party in two weeks. This automatically means that May will add up the powers of the head of government.

“It is in the best interest of the country that the new prime minister assumes this responsibility,” said May. She added that she had agreed with the chairman of the party and the Conservative faction in the House of Commons that the election of a new leader would be held within a week after her resignation. Until the transfer of power at the head of the Cabinet will remain May.

Teresa May became Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on July 13, 2016, shortly after the referendum on the country’s withdrawal from the European Union and the announcement of the resignation of the previous Prime Minister David Cameron. May became the second woman to take the post of British Prime Minister after Margaret Thatcher.

The main stumbling block for May was Brexit, for which British citizens voted in a referendum in 2016 with a minimal advantage. A notification to the European Union about the beginning of the UK exit procedure was sent to Brussels on March 29, 2017. It was expected that the country would leave the union in two years.

During this time, the parties agreed on the conditions under which London will withdraw from the union – the so-called Brexit deal.

However, Theresa May failed to hold it through parliament: the document failed three times in a vote. The first defeat was the loudest for projects submitted by the government to legislators. At the same time, the House of Commons opposed withdrawal from the EU without agreement at all, which created a deadlock.

The main non-acceptance of the parliamentarians was caused by the provision on border and customs control at the border of Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, and Ireland, which is part of the European Union.

The agreement agreed by May with Brussels assumed that Northern Ireland would be subject to EU rules and remain part of a single Customs Union for a transitional period. Parliamentarians felt that this devalued Brexit.

As a result, the exit of the UK from the European Union was delayed until the end of October. If, before this time, the deal is not approved in London, then Brexit will follow the “hard” scenario – without an agreement at all.

Speaking in Downing Street, the Prime Minister admitted that she had failed to solve the task of leaving the EU: “Unfortunately, I was unable to do so. I tried three times, ”said May. She still believes that her version of the agreement was “the best possible”.

“I will soon leave this job, which was a great honor for me. The second woman is the prime minister, but definitely not the last. I leave the post not with bad thoughts, but only with great and sincere gratitude for the opportunity to serve the country I love,” the Prime Minister said.

At the end of the speech, her voice broke: having finished the phrase, she abruptly turned around and disappeared into the residence. This can be seen on the record of the speech posted on Prime Minister’s official Twitter.

At the time of May, the head of government was one of the biggest scandals between Britain and Russia in recent years. According to London, Russia is involved in the poisoning of the former GRU employee and British agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with the novice poison.

In connection with this case, a number of EU countries, the USA, Canada and Australia sent part of Russian diplomats, some of them recalled their ambassadors. Russia denies all accusations of involvement in the poisoning of Skripal.
