LIBYA (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Libya’s national reconciliation chief, Fayez Sarraj, warned in interviews with two Italian newspapers that the war in his country could push more than 800,000 migrants to European shores.
“There will not only be 800,000 immigrants ready to leave,” he told La Repubblica newspaper. “There will be Libyans fleeing this war as the terrorists of the Islamic state resurgence their activities in southern Libya.”
Italy and Europe must be united and firm in confronting the aggressive war waged by Khalifa Haftar, a man who has betrayed Libya and the international community, “he said, adding that the destruction would also affect neighboring countries.
The fighting has continued since April 4 in the southern suburbs of Tripoli between the forces of Hafer and those of the government of Al-Wefaq.
“Al-Mushir Hafter says he is attacking the terrorists, but here there are only civilians,” Serraj said in another interview with the Corriere della Sera newspaper. He called on the international community to help.
“They attack civilian installations, roads, schools, homes, airports and medical facilities from ambulances and hospitals,” he said.
Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini repeated in recent days that Italian ports would remain closed. “We will never allow 800,000 immigrants to Italy,” Deputy Prime Minister Luigi de Mayo said.
De Mayo reiterated that Europe as a whole should intervene in the immigration issue through a “redistribution policy for migrants” and a “policy of cooperation to stabilize Libya”.
“It is impossible to predict how many people can leave Libya,” the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said on social networking sites. “There is concern now about the security of civilians and migrants in the country.”
A total of 147 people have been killed and 614 others wounded since the attack began on the Libyan capital, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) toll on Monday.
