UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Negotiations sales representatives stalled: the parties have not been able to find a common language.
Trust between the United States and the European Union is at a “record low,” said European MP Mariette Shaake after both sides failed to find a compromise on trade issues.
The US and European trade representatives met last week in Washington, trying to iron out differences. However, the negotiations are at an impasse, after both sides could not agree on the details, in particular, according to CNN, regarding the fact that the EU will buy more American agricultural products.
“The EU obviously wants to have a rule-based trade, we want to strengthen the multilateral system, and we believe that mutual benefit is to have the US as a partner,” added Shaake. “But President Trump clearly has other ideas. He believes in more protectionist, nationalistic agenda, and it’s difficult to deal with because we don’t really know what we can discuss there.”
Friction between the US and the EU also means that the parties will not be able to join forces in opposing China, said Shaak.
Trump repeatedly attacked Beijing for allegedly dishonest practice: he accused China of stealing intellectual property, trade and administrative barriers for American companies that want to work in China, and a huge trade imbalance between the two countries.
Such tensions between the two largest economies in the world led to a significant increase in trade duties during 2018, until Trump and Xi Jinping agreed on an armistice during the negotiations in December last year.
At the same time, as noted by Shaak and other European officials, the EU partly shares the position of the United States with respect to China.
