UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Sweden’s prosecutor announced that she was reopening a rape case against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

Prosecutors will resume preliminary investigations, which were closed in 2017 without charge, because of Asang’s asylum to the Ecuadorian embassy in London, Swedish prosecutor Eva-Marie Pearson said at a news conference. Sweden would seek Assange’s extradition from the British authorities, Swedish prosecutor Eva-Marie Pearson told a news conference.

Assange was arrested in Britain last month after spending seven years inside the Ecuadorian embassy, while the United States also seeks extradition on charges of revealing WikiLeaks secret documents.

Asang’s lawyer expressed his surprise at the Swedish prosecutor’s decision to reopen initial investigations with Assange, saying that the decision “embarrasses Sweden.”

Assange’s intention to cooperate with the investigators, but expressed his fear of handing over to the United States.

Wikileaks editor Christine Hravensson said reopening Assange’s rape investigation would give him an opportunity to acquit himself.

Since Assange’s arrest on April 11, 2019, considerable political pressure has been put on Sweden to reopen the investigation and the case has always been accompanied by a lot of political pressure, Hravensson said.

The Swedish authorities issued an arrest warrant for Assange in 2010 and charged with rape and sexual harassment of two women. The founder of Wikileaks categorically rejects the charges and insists that they are linked to the publication of classified information leaked by the Pentagon, which has seriously damaged the reputation of the US government.

The British court decided in February 2011 to extradite Assange, who was jailed in the country, to Sweden for trial. But after his parole he was granted refugee status at the Ecuadorian embassy in London to escape his extradition from Sweden to the United States.
