British scientists, after analyzing the average frequency of eruptions of super-volcanoes, came to the conclusion that they happen more often than previously thought. The article is published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters.
According to experts, the last eruption was 20 thousand years ago. Previously it was believed that they occur once in 45-714 thousand years.
However, according to new data, super-eruptions happen 19 times more often. And it should have happened about ten thousand years ago, and now a catastrophe can happen at any time.
The last super-eruption occurred 26.5 thousand years ago. Then the New Zealand volcano Oruanui erupted more than a thousand cubic kilometers of various rocks, which led to a glacial maximum.
Eruptions of super volcanoes are considered to be the largest natural catastrophes from those that occurred on Earth. They can arrange a long volcanic winter on the planet. Currently, no state has a plan of action in the event of its onset.
Previously, scientists have found that a catastrophe is threatened by a volcano near Naples in Italy, the last eruption of which happened 40 thousand years ago.
