Sudanese authorities have arrested a Reuters journalist and a reporter for the French Press Agency who were covering protests in the capital Khartoum, the foreign media council, which handles foreign media, said.

Reuters last contacted her reporter early on Wednesday before heading to cover demonstrations that led to clashes between police and protesters.

An official at the external media council, contacted by Reuters, did not say whether Sudanese journalists would be charged. The official said earlier that they would be released early on Thursday.

“We do not know the circumstances of the arrest and are seeking further information about the situation,” a Reuters spokesman said.

AFP confirmed the arrest of one of its journalists. The agency said in an article that its administration condemns his arrest and requests his immediate release.

Protests and clashes with security forces erupted across the country earlier this month after Khartoum imposed tough economic measures consistent with IMF recommendations.
