Spain announces it will send a military ship to transport stranded migrants near Lampedusa, Italy

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Spain said on Tuesday it would send a military ship to the Italian island of Lampedusa to transport migrants stranded 19 days ago on a charity ship after Italy refused to take them.

“The Odaz will leave this evening at 5 pm (15:00 GMT) and sail for three days to Lampedusa, where it will take over responsibility for the migrants recovered by the Open Arms,” the government said in a statement.

Earlier on Tuesday, 10 desperate migrants rescued by the NGO Proactiva Open Arms jumped into the water to try to reach the nearby island of Lampedusa.

The ship’s owner organization warned that the situation was “out of control” after Italy refused to enter the port.

The ship has been stalled off the coast of Lampedusa for days and is seeking a landing permit, while the situation is growing tense as migrants, some of whom have been on board since rescuing them off Libya 19 days ago, are desperate.

One of the 98 migrants jumped into the water trying to swim to Lampedusa, the organization said in a tweet.

Hours later, she said nine others threw themselves into the water to reach Lampedusa beach, stressing that “the situation is out of control.”

A spokeswoman for the organization said that the nine were taken out of the water and became “aboard a boat belonging to the Italian Coast Guard.”

On Sunday, Madrid offered to receive the ship at the port of Algeciras, in southern Spain.

France, for its part, expressed its readiness to receive 40 people on board “Open Arms”, according to the French Interior Ministry on Sunday told Agence France-Presse.

Italy’s interior minister and far-right leader Matteo Salvini on Saturday reluctantly allowed 27 minors, but he remained reluctant to take the rest.
