Smart assistants, artificial intelligence and virtual reality will become an integral part of the life of every gadget lover this year.

Last week, thousands of technology companies presented their latest innovations and the most exciting prototypes in Las Vegas at the international technology exhibition CES (Consumer Electronics Show).

Sony also intends to surprise everyone by presenting a line of gadgets that goes beyond the usual principle of “from lenses to devices in the living room” – these are new cameras, televisions, built-in car audio systems, headphones and much more.

To see the broader picture of multimedia trends that will reign in 2018, Forbes talked with Sony’s president and CEO Mike Fasulo and figured out how artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and new models of devices and entire services are moving the industry forward.

– Clever helpers –

“With all the achievements of artificial intelligence, a sophisticated user is much more difficult to surprise than before, because he needs even more versatile, simple and effective voice assistants at home and at work. New tasks appear not only from the point of view of technology development, but also from strategic development: what kind of everyday life should be with all smart and communicating devices and what kind of devices it should be.”

– The turning point for virtual reality –

“On the virtual reality in the last year, it seems, everything has been said, but since recent times the general attention has shifted to artificial intelligence. The sphere of technologies is currently in the active search for new promising directions, hardware and software are well behind the overall pace of the industry, but virtual reality has already passed the point of the highest popularity. Last summer, the price of helmets and virtual reality glasses for some manufacturers unexpectedly decreased, for example, in Oculus. At the same time, the volume of content development for such devices – on the contrary, has grown. Even the New York Times began to look at a similar format and began to produce news videos with a 360-degree review.”

– Film studios of new generation –

“Such video services as Netflix, Amazon Video and Hulu continue to conquer the entertainment and multimedia industry – they can be called the film studios of the new generation. They allow advertising revenue to develop an original high-quality product, and also collect statistical data on their own platforms and make strategic decisions based on them. Thus, these services are a serious challenge to traditional film studios and TV channels, because based on the statistics of their content views, they know what their audience will like.”
