Six policemen were wounded in a shootout in Philadelphia

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Six policemen were wounded Wednesday in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in an exchange of hours with a sniper who was holed up in a building but eventually arrested, local police said.

Philadelphia police chief Richard Ross told a news conference that all police had been discharged from hospital after treatment.

He added that two police officers who had been stuck in the building where the sniper was holed up had left during the night.

The incident began as an ordinary case involving drug trafficking. Ross said the police came to make an arrest when the suspect began shooting at them, forcing the security forces to respond.

“It is really a miracle that in such a confined space we do not have to talk about a heavy toll,” he said.

Philadelphia police spokesman Eric Ghareb said the special units were able to conduct the arrest and then search the entire building.

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenny praised the city’s police, but also blamed political officials for the absence of measures to curb armed violence.

“Federal and state authorities don’t want to do anything to remove weapons from the streets,” Kenny told reporters.

“Our elements deserve protection, they don’t deserve to be shot by a man for hours with an unlimited amount of ammunition. This is disgusting, we have to do something,” he said.

The incident followed two mass killings in August, one in El Paso, Texas, and the other in Dayton, Ohio, which killed 31 people and caused deep shock in the United States.
