Seven killed in factory explosion in China in second incident of its kind this month

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Seven people died in a factory explosion in Jiangsu Province, the second such incident in the province this month, while Beijing began a nationwide inspection of safety standards, local authorities said on Sunday.

The local government said on its official Web site that what happened on Sunday was caused by the explosion of a metal scrap container in the yard of a metal smelting plant, causing the fire in the factory.

She added that “the cause of the incident under investigation,” noting that the explosion killed seven people and wounding five, one of them seriously wounded.

The Taiwan-based owner of the plant was not available for comment.

The blast followed another March 21 at a chemical complex in a city in Yanqing, killing 78 people.
