Drunk people are more susceptible to homophobia and racist prejudices. To this conclusion came a group of researchers led by Professor Jonathan Shepherd of Cardiff University in the United Kingdom, reports NDTV with reference to the journal Criminal Behavior and Mental Health.

Experts conducted a survey among residents of three polyethnic cities: Cardiff, Blackburn and Leicester. It turned out that more than 18% of respondents were attacked on the basis of various prejudices, while in 90% of the cases the offenders were in a state of intoxication.

Such statistics indicate that alcohol affects the perception and awakens aggression towards representatives of other races and sex minorities, Shepherd believes.

According to the professor, the result of the study points to the need to strengthen control over the turnover of alcohol products in “multicultural” regions.
