UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Scientists have observed the development of DNA and analyzed the mechanisms that occur inside a damaged cell, thereby uncovering an enzyme that protects daughter cells from division if they have inherited DNA damage mother.
Danish scientists have discovered a mechanism that protects DNA from mutations and prevents the development of cancer. They published the results of their research on the Phys.org website.
Biologists have in particular studied specific organelles, the 53BP1 nuclear bodies, which are present in human cells. In their experiments, 53BP1 were labeled with fluorescent dyes and observed under a microscope over several generations of cells.
This allowed for the first time to follow the evolution of the damaged DNA since its appearance in the mother cells before its expression (synthesis of RNA and proteins) in daughter cells.
Thus, the scientists revealed that the nuclear bodies were there to protect the daughter cells from received and inherited damage. The enzyme RAD52 plays a key role and acts as a tumor suppressor.
Then nuclear bodies delay the division of the daughter cells in order to save time for repairing faults they have inherited. On the other hand, if this does not work, the damage remains permanently uncorrected and, when it accumulates, various diseases, including cancer, can develop.
