UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The first real image of a black hole in the galaxy M87 confirmed the fidelity of Einstein’s general theory of relativity, said Avery Broderick, a member of the Event Horizon Telescope project, on Wednesday at the University of Waterloo.
On Wednesday, Event Horizon Telescope published the first snapshot of a black hole, obtained using a network of radio telescopes, which began observing an object in the center of the M87 galaxy in April 2017.
“Today (the theory) of general relativity has passed another significant test,” said a project participant, admitting that when starting a project, his team did not know what to find.
As Broderick said, a black hole in the center of the galaxy rotates clockwise, the picture shows a bright circle around the dark core. All this, according to him, gives scientists the basis to make a confident conclusion that “an object in the center of M87 … is a black hole, such as the general theory of relativity describes.”
In addition, the scientist noted, an image comparable to previously obtained data confirms the key prediction of Einstein’s theory of gravity: all known black holes fit the same description. “Big or small black holes are similar to each other. What we learn about one thing is necessarily applicable to others,” Broderick concluded.
The project Event Horizon Telescope combines several radio telescopes located in different parts of the world. In 2017, the network consisted of eight vehicles, and will be expanded.
