Salvini presses for elections in Italy as soon as possible

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, who caused the collapse of the ruling populist coalition on Thursday, is holding a long series of meetings to try to force early elections as soon as possible.

The far-right leader is on a tour of the Adriatic coast on Friday and continues in the Basilicata region on Saturday and in Sicily on Sunday.

“The word must be restored to the Italians. It is a courageous and consistent choice, but also a dignity,” Salvini said Friday in Termoli, in the southeast, after taking many selfies with enthusiastic supporters.

Shortly after announcing the end of his five-star alliance on Thursday, Salvini took the opportunity of a meeting in Pescara (east) to call on parliamentarians to act “and return to Rome” to topple the government.

While the parliament is on recess, all MPs belonging to the League were summoned on Monday afternoon.

Five-star Luigi de Mayo, who was surprised by the coup of his former ally, plans to rally on Monday morning.

Presidents of the parliamentary blocs in the Senate are supposed to meet at 6 pm Monday to determine the timetable for this unprecedented crisis. If Italy used to overthrow governments, it is the first time that it may vote in the fall at a time when the budget should be discussed.

The Senate meeting is supposed to determine when parliamentarians will be summoned and whether the Senate will begin to receive Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, who has asked to speak before the Senate, or to examine the Association’s no-confidence motion against Conte on Friday.

Italian media reported that Conte first wanted to go to the G-20 summit, which opens on August 24 in Biarritz, southwest France, and choose the European-Italian commissioner, who is no longer obliged to agree with the association.

Observers, however, tend to have the first option: to call parliamentarians from August 19 or 20, with the dissolution of parliament a few days later, allowing, in the light of mandatory deadlines, the possibility of voting before late October, as Salvini asks.

He does not know what will be the position of Italian President Sergio Matarella, who alone has the power to dissolve parliament after consultations with the heads of the chambers of the legislature and political leaders, and then call for elections.

However, it is known that Matarella opposes elections in September / October, during a period when the government of the euro zone’s third economic powerhouse, which is facing huge debts, should prepare for next year’s budget and discuss it with the EU and adopt it in parliament.

The caretaker government will not have the weight necessary to negotiate with Brussels that could hurt Italy in the markets, as yields on Italian government bonds rose after Salvini announced the collapse of the coalition.

On Friday, Matarella moved to Sardinia for a few days off.

He is expected to join Gen Conte, his deputies de Mayo and Salvini on Wednesday in commemoration of the bridge collapse that killed 43 people last year.
