UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Russian dissident Alexei Navalny, in his first comments after his release on Friday, predicted an increase in opposition to President Vladimir Putin and mounting protests against the government.
Navalny, who is trying to win public support by revealing what he says is massive official corruption, spoke minutes after his release after 30 days in jail for supporting a protest calling for free elections.
“Now we see that lies and forgery are not enough,” Navalny told reporters. It is not enough to exclude candidates in the elections. They intentionally want to arrest dozens and beat hundreds … This shows that there is no popular support for this regime. They feel this and they are afraid. ”
“I have no doubt that despite the intense acts of intimidation and intimidation that are happening now, including the indiscriminate arrest of people, this wave (of protests) will increase and this regime will be deeply regretted for what it did.”
Navalny, 43, a lawyer, was jailed after calling for a demonstration in central Moscow to protest against the exclusion of opposition candidates from next month’s local elections in Moscow.
It is believed that the Moscow elections will serve as a model for what will be the legislative elections to be held throughout Russia in 2021.
