UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The Russian Foreign Ministry said its position on the Golan Heights is still stable, adding that Moscow regards it as Syrian territory occupied by Israel.
“The position of Russia on this issue is still firm, and undoubtedly the Golan Heights are Syrian territory occupied by Israel during the 1967 war and annexed 14 years later,” the ministry said in a statement.
He added that Moscow still adheres to UN resolution 494 of 1981, which considers Israel’s decision to publish its laws and sovereignty over these Syrian territories illegal and has no legal force.
“The overwhelming majority of members of the international community also adhere to this position, and every year an international resolution on the Syrian Golan Heights is adopted as part of the consideration of the 55th item on the agenda of the UN General Assembly.
The Russian ministry also noted Russia’s interest in maintaining calm in the region. She stressed that the return of UN observer forces to the Golan Heights, made possible by Russian efforts, was an important step towards stabilizing the region.
