UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — The world was one step away from an uncontrolled arms race due to US geopolitical admissions, Russia’s acting Permanent Representative to the United Nations Dmitry Polyansky said at a meeting of the Security Council.
The diplomat noted that the US partners because of indulging Washington “step by step returning from a historical nonexistence a situation where rockets were sent from different directions to European cities.”
“For our part, we will not be the first to resort to such a measure,” Polyansky said.
At the same time, he noted that there was “not much time” left until the situation described by him because “American colleagues have itchy hands, the desire to play with muscles prevails.”
The diplomat emphasized that Russia is concerned about the situation.
“But American colleagues, it seems, are not,” Polyansky said.
Infringement of the INF Treaty
The Acting Permanent Representative also said that the United States had long and deliberately violated the Treaty on the Elimination of Intermediate-Range and Shorter-Range Missiles, seeking to break the agreement.
The diplomat also emphasized that the American MK-41 launchers in Romania can be easily converted to the recently tested Tomahawks. He emphasized that this is prohibited by the INF Treaty.
“We immediately drew attention to this. Now it is quite obvious that we were right,” Polyansky added.
Speaking about the collapse of the INF Treaty, Polyansky emphasized that if the situation depended only on Russia, then “the world would never have been at the dangerous line that it now has”.
Threat to START-3
In addition, the Russian Permanent Representative emphasized that the extension of the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty, which expires in 2021, is also under threat from the United States.
“The key figures in the current US administration said that they are not interested in extending it,” the diplomat said.
Polyansky said that after Washington left the INF Treaty, “another pillar in the arms control architecture was knocked out.”
At the same time, the Russian side, he stressed, remains open to a serious dialogue on strategic stability.
The Acting Permanent Representative called on all members of the UN Security Council to join in resolving strategic issues. According to him, the “survival of mankind” depends on it.
INF Treaty and START-3
The USSR and the USA signed the INF Treaty in 1987: the parties pledged to destroy all systems of ground-based ballistic and cruise missiles with an average (1000-5500 km) and less (500 to 1000 km) range.
In October 2018, Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the deal due to Moscow’s “non-compliance” with obligations, but the American side did not provide evidence. In 2019, Russia – in response to U.S. actions – suspended its participation in the INF Treaty. On August 2, the contract terminated.
START-3, signed in 2010 by Barack Obama and Dmitry Medvedev, involves the mutual reduction of nuclear warheads to 1550 units, intercontinental ballistic missiles, ballistic missiles of submarines and heavy bombers – to 700 units.
This is the only arms limitation treaty between Russia and the United States. The agreement expires in 2021, and so far Washington has not decided whether to extend it. Russia, in turn, has repeatedly stated that it is ready to discuss this.
