Russian Foreign Ministry on Thursday accused US officials of leaking confidential banking data to Russian diplomats working in the United States to the media and demanding that those responsible be punished.
US officials said on Monday that US officials investigating allegations of interference by the Kremlin in the 2016 presidential election were examining records of remittances belonging to Russian diplomats and the site gave details of several bank transfers.
“Obviously, this would not have happened without the knowledge of the authorities of the country,” the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement. “In other words, this breach of the sanctity of the embassy’s accounts and staff enjoying diplomatic immunity is the work of officials in Washington.”
The statement added that the leaked transfers included only routine payments but were distorted to appear suspicious.
