Russia accuses the United States and Britain of “destabilizing” Venezuela

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Russia accused on Thursday, the United States and Britain of being behind the “destabilizing” the situation in Venezuela.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova made the remarks in the southwestern city of Orenburg.

“Washington has ignored Moscow’s calls to lift sanctions on sectors related to Venezuela’s social welfare,” Zakharova said.

“Russia aims to improve the humanitarian situation in the country.”

Zakharova also accused Britain of “preparing dozens of terrorists” at a base in neighboring Guyana in order to “further destabilize the situation” in Venezuela, without giving further details.

“A campaign is underway to discredit Venezuela, with the aim of portraying the country as a major drug-related threat in the region.”

She pointed out that the accusations against Venezuela are baseless, because they contradict the reports of the United Nations and the US State Department, in which other countries are identified as “a dominant supplier of drugs in the Western Hemisphere.”

Since January 23, 2019, Venezuela has been on heightened tensions, with the country’s parliament speaker, Juan Guaido, claiming him the right to temporarily assume the presidency until new elections are held.

Trump quickly recognized Guaido as Venezuela’s transitional president, followed by Canada, Latin American and European countries, while countries including Russia, Turkey, Mexico and Bolivia backed the legitimacy of incumbent Nicolas Maduro.

In light of this, Maduro announced the severance of diplomatic relations with the United States, accusing it of orchestrating a coup attempt.
