UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said the Islamic Republic was “too great to be intimidated by anyone” during a meeting with clerics on Monday night.
“With the help of God … we will pass this stage successfully and raise and loosen and defeat the enemy,” Rowhani said during a meeting with Sunni clerics at a breakfast ceremony.
His remarks came after four ships, including two Saudi oil tankers, were subjected to “sabotage” operations off the UAE coast on Sunday, a sign of heightened tension in the region.
Iran called for an investigation into what it called the “disturbing” incident.
Tension between Iran and the United States has been rising since the past few weeks, following Iran’s announcement to suspend some of its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal.
US President Donald Trump announced the withdrawal of the United States from the agreement last year and re-imposed strict unilateral sanctions on Iran.
Last month Washington included Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on its black list of “foreign terrorist organizations.”
Washington’s dispatch of aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, the escort, a warship, a Patriot battery and B-52 bombers to the region raised fears of possible military confrontations.
