Rouhani hopes that Johnson’s “briefing” will contribute to improving relations with Britain

UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Sunday he hoped Britain’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s “briefing” on the Islamic Republic would help improve relations between Iran and Britain and congratulated Rohani Johnson for his election as prime minister in a letter posted on the official website of the presidency.

Tension between Iran and Britain escalated after Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized control of a British-flagged oil tanker on July 19. This came two weeks after British forces detained an Iranian oil tanker near Gibraltar on charges of violating sanctions against Syria.

“It is my hope that your knowledge of the issues of relations between Iran and England and your presence in Tehran will help remove existing obstacles to the development and expansion of our relations,” Rouhani said in the letter.
