UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — A rocket fired from the Gaza Strip landed on Thursday in a building in the southern Israeli city of Sderot without causing any casualties, Israeli authorities said.

The municipality said in a statement that the building was empty at the moment of the rocket fall, while the Israeli army announced that “the extortion launched from the Gaza Strip towards Sderot,” without further details.

The Israeli police said that “a rocket hit a building in Sderot without causing injuries but caused material damage.”

The Israeli army said that its aircraft raided early Thursday a military site of the Hamas movement in the southern Gaza Strip, after a rocket fired from the Gaza Strip for the first time since the beginning of May.

It was the first time a rocket fired from Gaza into Israel since hundreds of rockets were fired in early May in a two-day military confrontation between Palestinians and Israelis that killed 25 Palestinians and four Israelis.

According to a Palestinian security source, the Israeli aircraft “launched several raids and targeted an empty area east of the Zaytoun neighborhood, east of Gaza City, and the shelling of two agricultural areas east of Rafah and Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip.

The Jewish state announced on Wednesday evening the closure of the maritime area in the Gaza Strip.

“With the continued firing of incendiary balloons from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory, a decision was made to close the maritime area on Wednesday night in Gaza until further notice,” the Israeli Defense Ministry said in a statement.

An Israeli fire department spokesman said the fiery balloons fired from Gaza caused seven fires on Tuesday alone.

The decision to close the maritime zone came after the agency announced on Tuesday that it had cut the allowable fishing area from 10 miles to six, up from 15 nautical miles a week ago.

Hamas blamed Israel for any consequences of closing the sea to fishermen.

“The Israeli occupation carries the consequences of its attempts to evade and delay the implementation of the understandings to end the suffering of our people in Gaza … under the pretext of elections or the existence of fires that are claimed to be caused by incendiary balloons,” said Fawzi Barham, spokesman for the movement.

Israel has imposed a land, sea and air blockade on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip for more than a decade.

For years, this range was 15 nautical miles. This is less than 20 nautical miles, as stipulated in the 1993 Oslo agreement between Israelis and Palestinians.

Israel and Palestinian factions in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip have fought three wars since 2008.
