UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Suspected Islamist militants attacked a town in northeastern Nigeria on Saturday and forced people to flee hours before polling stations opened, residents said.
“We ran away with our wives, children and hundreds of others,” said Ibrahim Joubi, who lives in the village of Guidam by telephone.
“We are now living in the bush.”
At about the same time, a Reuters witness said explosions were heard in Maiduguri, capital of the neighboring state of Borno.
