CHINA (VOP TODAY NEWS) — An international team of researchers has found human remains dating back to the Middle Pleistocene, about 300,000 BC. BC, Guangdong, China. According to them, this discovery could give a new impetus to modern anthropology.

Scientists have discovered in Guangdong, China, human remains in brecciated deposits, that is, sedimentary layers of angular rocks formed thousands of years ago from glacial flows. The results of their research were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

In total, they uncovered the fossilized remains of sixteen human beings, namely parts of skulls, seven teeth and many femurs. The most spectacular discovery is the skull of a teenager in good condition.

According to the researchers, it turned out that the characteristics of these remains were comparable to those of the first modern men. “The reduced mid-facial area, symphyseal mandibular morphology and the simplicity of the dental crown of these fossils foreshadow the characteristics of early modern humans, supporting a certain degree of regional coherence ranging from archaic morphology to modern morphology”, explain the researchers.

The first human remains in East Asia and other regions continue to be “scattered, fragmented and / or poorly dated”, this collection of vestiges providing essential data to reconstruct the puzzle of human evolution.

These remains also contribute to reinforcing the trends already observed by archaeologists, ensuring continuity with other Middle Pleistocene vestiges and consistent with the patterns of regional change observed so far in the Old World.
