Ramadan police unmask Muslims who do not fast in Malaysia

UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — City workers disguise themselves as cooks and waiters in Malaysia to find Muslims who do not fast during Ramadan, photograph them and warn the religious council, according to the Malaysian newspaper New Straits Times.

Thirty-two municipal workers from a local council in Malaysia , a predominantly Muslim country, dress up as cooks and waiters to catch Muslims in the act of gluttony during the holy month of Ramadan, the Malaysian newspaper New Straits Times reported. The operation is deployed in the district of Segamat, in the south of the country, in 185 restaurants.

One condition was mandatory at the selection for this task: the skin color because many restaurant employees are migrant workers , said to the newspaper Mohd Masni Wakiman, chairman of the Segamat City Council.

“We have specially selected enforcement agents who have dark skin for undercover work. They are convincing when they speak Indonesian and Pakistani and customers believe they are really hired to cook, serve meals and take orders,” he said.

If Muslims are seen ordering food during the day, officers will take pictures of them in secret before contacting the Islamic religious council, said Mohd Masni Wakiman.

A week ago, a 14-year-old girl was beaten by a school bus driver in Morocco for eating in her car during Ramadan.

Muslims are required to fast from dawn to dusk during the holiest month of Islam, unless they are subject to special dispensations such as sickness.
