UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday warned anyone trying to manipulate elections that he was risking his life, accusing the Independent Electoral Commission of incompetence.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) announced early on Saturday that the elections should be postponed hours before voters turn to polling stations.
Bukhari said anyone who tried to steal or destroy ballot boxes or electoral materials scheduled for Saturday would be dealt with strictly.
“I have been given instructions to the army and the police to act strictly,” he said during an emergency meeting with leaders of the ruling Progressive Congress party in the capital Abuja. We will not be held responsible for the mismanagement of the elections. ”
Anyone who seeks to intimidate voters or interfere in elections will “do so at the expense of his life,” he said.
The opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) hinted that Bukhari was behind the delay in order to hold onto power.
The opposition party responded to Bukhari’s statement in a statement, in which he said, “President Mohamed Bukhari’s threat to the lives of Nigerians during his meeting today … a direct call for the implementation of the justice of the jungle.”
Bukhari faces fierce competition from Atiq Abu Bakr, candidate of the People’s Democratic Party.
Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy and the continent’s biggest oil producer, suffers from corruption and the widening gap between rich and poor.
The Independent Electoral Commission has attributed the postponement of the election to logistical problems, and said the elections would be held on February 23. Some 84 million registered people are eligible to vote.
