A powerful earthquake jolted Mexico City on Tuesday, causing buildings to sway sickeningly on the anniversary of a 1985 quake that did major damage to the capital.

Reports of multiple casualties after a powerful earthquake struck Mexico City this morning.

An earthquake of 7.4 magnitude hit southern Mexico on Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake hit 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Atencingo in the state of Puebla at a depth of 32 miles (51 km), USGS said.

The extent of damage or injuries was not immediately clear, but people fled office buildings along the central Reforma Avenue.

Mexico’s seismological agency calculated its preliminary magnitude at 6.8 and said its center was east of the city in the state of Puebla. The United States Geological Survey put the preliminary magnitude at 7.4.

The have so far no reports of casualties of destruction as a result of the quake.

Mexico’s seismological agency calculated its preliminary magnitude at 6.8 and said its center was east of the city in the state of Puebla. Pictures fell from walls and objects were shaken off of flat surfaces. Some people dove for cover under desks.
