UNITED STATES (VOP TODAY NEWS) — Pope Francis on Thursday revealed a law forcing priests, monks and nuns to report any suspicion of sexual assault or harassment , as well as any church officials who condone such acts.
On the other hand, all dioceses will be worldwide and within a year, it is mandatory to develop a system that the public can use to report potential sexual abuse to be considered within ninety days.
The law came in a letter issued directly by the pope to amend the law of the church.
The Pontiff, however, expressed the hope that the secret of confession would never remain, thereby excluding the facts revealed by the person in question.
“The crimes of sexual assault harm our Lord and inflict physical, psychological and spiritual harm on the victims.”
“It is useful that measures are adopted at the global level to prevent these crimes, which betray the faith of the faithful and confront them,” said Pope Francis. The Pope concluded that “in order not to recur these phenomena, in all their forms, there is a need for a continuous and profound transformation of hearts, tested through concrete and effective actions involving both sons of the Church.”
