UNITED STATES, WASHINGTON (VOP TODAY NEWS) — US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo acknowledged on Tuesday that IS was gaining strength in some areas, but said his ability to carry out attacks had diminished considerably.
“It’s complicated,” he said in an interview with CBS’s “This Morning” program. There are definitely places where ISIS is more powerful today than it was three or four years ago. ”
But he said the caliphate declared by the group had ceased to exist and its ability to launch attacks was much harder.
Pompeo was asked about a New York Times report that the militant group was gaining new strength in Iraq and Syria.
US President Donald Trump said in December that US forces had succeeded in defeating the Islamic State in Syria and no longer needed them. “We won,” he said at the time.
Pompeo said the plan to defeat the Islamic State in the region was being implemented with the participation of 80 other countries and was very successful.
But he cautioned that the risk of a resurgence of “terrorist Islamic militant groups” was always present, including al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
In Geneva, a senior Chinese official warned on Tuesday against ISIS resurgence in Syria and urged progress in the political process between the Syrian government and the opposition to end the war.
China has long been concerned about Uighurs in the far western region of Xinjiang, who have secretly traveled to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside Islamist militant groups.
ISIS claimed responsibility for a suicide attack on a wedding party that killed 63 people and wounded 182 on Saturday in the Afghan capital Kabul.
